Malefice - A True Story of a Demonic Haunting review

Malefice - A True Story of a Demonic Haunting

Travel Channel seems to have all the paranormal shows you could want right? Ghost Adventures, Expedition Bigfoot, Destination Fear. Well, if you like those then you need to watch a new documentary called Malefice – A True Story of a Demonic Haunting. Demonologist/Paranormal Investigator Sean Austin – formerly of Travel Channel’s Ghost Loop - produces this 90-minute spooky piece of ghost hunting that is streaming on the new ScareNetwork.tv. It follows Sean and his team digging deeper into an investigation they conducted in Ohio in 2015. Some pretty bad things happened to some women at the residence where the investigation took place, and the force has now set its sights on him. A return visit over 4 nights in January of 2021 gave us this doc.

Most of these paranormal shows follow the same format which isn’t bad but since this isn’t your 60-minute network constraint, this was more interesting. All the ghost hunter gadgets are used in their investigations. Voice recordings for EVP sessions, spirit boxes, and as many cameras as possible. They did a good job of capturing as much footage as possible and it works well in telling the story of their 4 days in this house. Some of the moments that made the final cut are really good. The house where this takes place is creepy enough by itself, but great camera work helped. It’s snowy and cold and it just gives it that extra touch of evil you could say. Nice dolly and stabilizer shots along with some good drone shots boost production value. Interviews are really framed well and juxtapose well with the guerilla footage of the investigation itself.

While they are ghost hunting, Sean enlists the help of another Demonologist (who is former NYPD) to help with what might be the first virtual exorcism I’ve ever seen. Their intent is to send this evil right back to hell. Sean’s team is solid, and they know their stuff. I’ve watched a lot of these shows over the years and really liked this group. Certainly give it a watch sometime to scratch your ghost hunter itch!
