Demon Castle review

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog. For those who know me you know about my love for horror films so once a month I’m going to review and discuss a scary flick. We’ll look at the classics, some new films, and I want your suggestions on what I should review. I’ll do my best to cover all the different genres within the genre – slashers, ghosts, monsters, etc.

SPOILER ALERT! – These will be reviews so if you haven’t seen the movie you’ll want to watch it first before you read this. Let’s do this.

Who’s up for a paranormal investigation? Me, me!! Investigator Sean Austin continues doing his thing and I’m very glad to have been asked by him to review his latest documentary, Demon Castle. I’ll say right away this was probably my favorite piece so far that I’ve reviewed for him. It’s in 2 parts which are roughly 90 minutes each.

In 1871 in upstate New York, the Superintendent of the Auburn Woolen Mill – Samuel Laurie - had a house built for himself and his family resembling a Scottish castle. Very nice architecture along with a guest house. His wife dies of the flu in the house and is buried there along with other family members while he later passes away out of state. The house is sold to a new owner on Halloween in 2020 and Sean gets involved via a friend who is in contact with the new owner, and they would like to see what type of activity is going on in the manor.

Sean teams up with Eric Conner, Mollie Lewis, and Chris Mendace on this investigation as he ends up needing all the help he can get.

The new owner would like to live in the home ultimately, so Sean and Eric do an exploratory session and find out there is quite a bit happening here. Things get serious during this with some strange things showing up in photos and growling noises. Throughout the film, we see interviews with the caretaker of the home who tells facts and info and we also get an interview with her son who mentions finding a box with the word ODIN written on it. Love the sit down with the whole team before they begin the investigation as they prepare themselves. They learn that there was a group of people who performed a ritual in the house and most likely let in something evil. The team uses rem pods, necrometers, and more on this hunt and a lot of this content is of them asking questions and getting a good number of responses back. One of the more memorable moments is when Sean demands whoever is here answer their questions and they all hear or see elements of a snake including hissing sounds.

The team begins to understand they are dealing with not just human ghosts, but evil demonic entities. Eric remarks at one point that this is one of the most active places he has ever been to. Most of part 1 is the backstory and the 1st night of investigating. Don’t forget there is also a guest house on the property to explore! Someone in the group has their good luck charm fall off their key chain while another feels the physical effects of being in the space. They take numerous photographs that show orbs and anomalies. The second night’s investigation is just as intriguing and this after we find out that a previous owner fell to their death in the basement stairs. They realize this force is angry and the team makes the decision to perform an exorcism ritual.

Nearing the conclusion, Eric again mentions how dangerous this location is and after learning more about Norse mythology, specifically Odin, it would seem the people who did the ritual previously in the house may have used that idol. After the Auburn house case wraps, Sean visits a site in Indiana that begins to involve Odin and the Auburn house. I won’t spoil this so you’ll need to watch it!

I found this very interesting and it’s great that we have so much technology now that these investigations can yield real-time results. Given the deeper work that Sean went into in Indiana, this became a very personal case for him.

I also want to give a shout to the production team. These investigations are done in the middle of the night, go on for hours, and are recorded on multiple cams, etc. All that footage needs to be scrubbed through to make a compelling piece which they absolutely did. Combined with nice dolly and slider shots and good interviews, this was a nicely put-together story. It also showed me a new ghost-hunting app for my phone – Spirit Talker!

This was an intense case for the team and time will tell if everything works out for the new owners of Auburn Castle. Also hope for peace and closure for everyone involved in the case in Indiana that Sean investigated.
