Unholy Song

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog. For those who know me you know about my love for horror films so once a month, I’m going to review and discuss a scary flick. We’ll look at the classics, and some new films, and I want your suggestions on what I should review. I’ll do my best to cover all the different genres within the genre – slashers, ghosts, monsters, etc.

SPOILER ALERT! – These will be reviews so if you haven’t seen the movie you’ll want to watch it first before you read this. Let’s do this.

UNHOLY SONG

Exorcism! Quite the (misunderstood) horror topic and subgenre. I will go to my grave saying there is only one king of that subject and it’s The Exorcist. It’s truly the only film you need to watch on the subject. That being said, it doesn’t mean I won’t continue to watch movies about it! A new film, Unholy Song was brought to my attention which is about said topic, so I had to do right by the filmmaker and give it a view.

Unholy Song is a retelling of the Miracle of Gerasene Swine exorcism that was supposedly performed by Jesus Christ himself. During an exorcism Jesus performed on a man, he cast the demons into some pigs who then dove into a nearby river and drowned. Hey horror fans, does this sound familiar? At the conclusion of The Exorcist, Father Merrin calls the demons into him only to jump out a window once they invade him. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. In Unholy Song, the story is happening in California to a man and his tenants. Terrance lives by himself and is now renting out two of his rooms. He makes a point to tell them not enter a shed out back under any circumstances. The two new roommates – Vivi and Fred – of course go inside during a housewarming party. The plot gets deeper after that and a bit chaotic. We go back in time and see Terrance with his partner as they run their junk hauling company. Their latest customer wants a tape recorder taken away claiming it’s evil. Terrance’s wife runs afoul to it and is possessed and kills herself. It turns out the man who called Terrance to come get the recorder had a sister who attempted to curse him by recording herself playing a song on the piano. Unfortunately for her, her brother comes in and kills her while she’s recording, and it ends up cursing the tape itself. Terrance and his roommates have enlisted Father Bernard (played by one of the film’s Producers Eric Parkinson, and the kind enough person to send me the film to review!) to help exorcise those demons! The climax is one that I won’t ruin for you – you’ll have to watch yourself!

Possession films really do start and end with The Exorcist, but it’s a subgenre that doesn’t go away. Everyone seems to believe in God or the Devil, or both, or another form of that duo. As long as those beliefs are around, we’ll have these movies. Arthur G. Night directs and while I have issues with some of the performances, I liked to story overall. It won Best Horror Feature at the L.A. Punk Film Festival. I’ve written before about films that involve possession and the devil, and the key takeaway is don’t mess with this stuff. If you ever come across a cursed tape recorder, send it to the dump! Unholy Song hit theaters on February 28th
